Department of Marathi
The Department of Marathi was established in1922 in which both UG and PG classes were held until 1970. In 1971 the PG classes were shifted to the newly established Shivaji University, Kolhapur. The department flourished with .a remarkable contribution of eminent teachers like Prof. D. C. Pangu, Prof. Khanvilkar, and Prof. Balkrishna Kawthekar. It is significant to note that teachers of other subjects also contributed a lot to development of the department. Prof. N. C. Phadke a teacher of Philosophy and Logic and one of the most popular novelist of his time and Prof. Madhav Julian a renowned poet who was awarded D. Lit by the Bombay University for his book “Chandorachana” created interest for Marathi literature in the students.
The Department of Marathi is proud of having shaped literary giants in their formative period like N. C. Kelkar, G. V. alias Vinda Karandikar, Sakha Kalal, Yashvantrao Chavan, Indira Sant, Baba Kadam, Ramesh Mantri, Pandit Awalikar, Dr. Vasant Joshi, Dr. Vijaya Rajadhyaksha, Ranjit Desai and Mrs. Madhavi Desai.
At present Marathi is taught as a compulsory and option subject only at the B. A. I level.
The wall paper 'Ushakal' (Dawn) of the department has provided a lot of opportunities to the budding writers. Marathi Literary Association of the Department organizes various activities like Essay Competition, Elocution Competition and Poetry Recitation every year and continues to guide and encourage the amateur literary enthuziasts.
