Department of Mathematics

Although the science faculty of Rajaram College was established in 1927, Mathematics was taught earlier in B. A. classes. When there were only two classes in the college viz. Pre-University and Inter, Mathematics was one of the optional subjects. Thus department of Mathematics was established in 1922 in the Arts faculty and was later attached to the Science faculty in 1927.

The lecturers from the department have worked as resource persons to teach New Mathematics to High school teachers of Sangli, Kolhapur, Ratnagiri districts from 1970 to 1988 on behalf of the State Govt. and later under the N.C.E.R.T. (The evidence and records of this activity are with the college office.)

Special Aspect:

The department has a fully equipped computer laboratory with seven computers, two printers and thirty-six scientific calculators.

Contribution:
Extra-ordinary Students:
  1. Gopalkrishna Gokhale a great political thinker and guide of Mahatma Gandhi, Gopalkrishna Gokhale was a student of this college. He became Professor of English later. His contribution to the mathematical world was his famous book “The Arithmetic” which was commonly known as “Gokhale’s Ganeet”. The book virtually dominated the teaching of Mathematics at school level throughout India for many decades and many generations.
  2. V. S. Hujurbazar was a student of Mathematics in the college. After graduation in Mathematics he opted for Statistics at postgraduation. He was a professor of Statistics at Pune University. Internationally famous, he has to his credit some theorems in Statistics which are universally accepted.
  3. M. S. Hujurbazar. An exceptionally intelligent. professor of Mathematics at Institute of Science, Mumbai. Though he was not Ph. D. himself, he was recognised as guide for Ph. D.
  4. Wrangler Dr. V. V. Naralikar was the only student of Rajaram college who secured the highest rank in Mathematics viz, Senior Wrangler at Cambridge.
