History
The department of Microbiology was established in the year 1979-80 specially to mark the centenary of the college. It was initiated in a single laboratory of the Botany department. This was the only Microbiology department in the entire Kolhapur district for almost two decades. Students from Konkan ,Karnataka and the nearby urban & rural area seek admissions here.
The increasing need of the classes for space resulted in shifting of the department in the main building. Thus the department obtained its own establishment in December 1999 during the tenure of Principal Dr. S. P. Nanir.
In the year 2001-02, an UGC sponsored vocational course in Industrial Microbiology was initiated to fulfill the requirements of increasing demands of skilled Industrial microbiologists. This was later converted to a self supporting course. It is the only department offering a self supporting vocational course in Industrial Microbiology amongst all the colleges affiliated to Shivaji University. Dr.Mrs .Y.C.Attar is the coordinator of Industrial Microbiology
On-Job-Training and research projects given to these students, grooms them as per the needs of industries present around.
We have established very strong interactive bonds with the neighboring industries for providing On Job Training to students
The department is recognized as a Research Laboratory for Ph.D. work since 2013-2014.
Almost more than 95% of students pursue postgraduate courses not only in Microbiology but also in allied branches like Biochemistry, Environmental Science, Biotechnology, Biomedical technology Virology, Environmental Management, Food Science & Technology, Health & Dietetics Bioinformatics etc. in the Country & Abroad. The students also get diverted to other PG courses like MCA, MBA,MEM etc.
The department keenly focuses on organizing several curricular, co-curricular, extracurricular and extension activities for the over-all personality development of students.
