History
The subject history is being taught in Rajaram College since its establishment. In 1922, History was introduced as a special subject at B.A. level. In the year 1922, Dr. Balakrishna, an active member of Arya Samaj was invited by Rajarshi Chatrapati Shahu Maharaj of Kolhapur to run this institution. Dr. Balkrishna was a renowned historian and had special interest in Maratha History. He wrote ‘Shivaji the Great’ in 4 volumes and it is considered as a one of the seminal workson the life of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Renowned and internationally famed professors like Dr. Vishwas, Dr. Banerjee and Dr. Sen were invited by Dr. Balkrishna to work for Rajaram College. All these learned professors added fame and allure to the Rajaram College and the college became famous centre of learning in western India.
In 1926, postgraduate classes were started in the Institute. Dr. A. G. Pawar, served in this department and later became Head of the Department. He then took over as the Principal of the college and contributed immensely in progress and growth of the college. Dr. Pawar went on to become the Director of Higher Education of the former Bombay Presidency and he was also the founder Vice-Chancellor of Shivaji University, Kolhapur and adorned this position for a considerable period of time.
