History
The Department of English started functioning in the year 1880 and in three years’ time degree classes were introduced. The post-graduation classes were also started in 1935, which continued up to 1964 till the foundation of Department of English, by Shivaji University, Kolhapur. Renowned teachers of English include Prin. C. H. Candy, Prin. Darby, Prin. Balasaheb Khardekar, Prof. V. K. Gokak, Prin. Menezes and the like. This tradition of eminent scholars of English language was later on continued by scholars like K. D. Pednekar, Dr. S. K. Desai, Mr. M. V. Rajadhyaksha and others.
The Present
Presently, English is taught as a compulsory subject to B.A. and B.Sc. courses. It is taught as an optional subject at B.A.-I and B.A.-II. There is a provision of Additional English paper at B.A.-I. Besides, English is taught as a special subject at B.A.-III. The Department of English has been striving to enrich its glorious tradition by arranging various novel activities.
